Potosi, Wisconsin
"Catfish Capital"
Potosi is located in Southwest Wisconsin close to the Mississippi River. The "Twin Cities" of Potosi and Tennyson are located only 20 minutes from Dubuque, Iowa, to which some of our residents commute daily to work.
The villages have an aggressive Chamber of Commerce interested in attracting additional business and tourist traffic. Lead mining history, camping, hunting, fishing, canoeing, snowmobiling, plus the beautiful landscape all serve to make "The Catfish Capital of Wisconsin" a natural beauty attraction.
The Potosi Brewery buildings were purchased in the spring of 1999 by a group of concerned citizens who wished to save them from total deterioration. In March of 1999 a public meeting was held, and by February of 2000 a non-profit corporation, The Potosi Brewery Foundation Incorporated, was formed. "The purpose of the corporation is to restore an historic landmark, the Potosi Brewery site, and to reconnect the community to a part of its cultural heritage; it is a further purpose to return the site to the community as a self-sustaining entity by incorporating into the restoration limited commercial development; it is a further purpose to use the site as a tourist attraction of historic interest contributing to the viability of the community; finally, it is a purpose to use the site as an educational center reflecting not only the Potosi community but also southwestern Wisconsin and the tri-state areas." And that is exactly what they did!
The non-profit Potosi Brewery Foundation has fully restored the historic landmark into a microbrewery, restaurant, gift shop and a Great River Road Interpretive Center within the 30,000-sqare-foot facility, with 7,000 square feet devoted to the National Brewery Museum and Great River Road Interpretive Center. Good roads, utilities, and an excellent school system make Potosi/Tennyson a great place to live, work, and enjoy life.
